Koolhof Earth provides technical and administrative support to Caryn Canfield (the Rock Creek Watershed Steward), in her activities to understand the existing drivers of poor water quality in Rock Creek, and to develop a watershed action plan that addresses the improvements needed to restore Rock Creek to health.
Rock Creek is a tributary of the tidal Patapsco River located in Pasadena, a small community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It has been closed to water contact recreation for more than thirty years due to poor water quality.
Koolhof Earth volunteers attended Maryland Department of Natural Resources Stream Waders training in February 2010, and with this training and equipment, conducted habitat assessments and macrobenthic sampling of the nontidal headwater streams flowing into tidal Rock Creek in late March and April of 2010. Additionally, Koolhof Earth volunteers, together with other volunteers from RestoreRockCreek.org, have organized stream clean-ups, conducted rain barrel demonstrations, rain barrel sales and oyster cultivation projects.
